Every day, the robot searches Unsplash for a bird photo and attempts to identify it using Bioclip.
The details of the photo and its identification are then posted on Bluesky for everyone to see and enjoy.

Identifications are sometimes incorrect, why?

BotEnSky uses two artificial intelligence systems to identify plants and birds:

  • Pl@ntNet API for plant and flower identification
  • BioClip for bird and animal identification

Both systems are based on machine learning models. While they are highly accurate, they are not perfect and can make mistakes.

Errors can occur for several reasons: photo quality, shooting angle, similar species, lighting conditions, etc.

The displayed percentage (e.g., "94.44%") represents the confidence level in the identification. The higher the percentage, the more reliable the result is considered. A low score may indicate a rare species, an ambiguous photo, or similarity with other species.

For PlantNet: You can help improve the database by reporting errors on identify.plantnet.org or by contributing photos on my.plantnet.org.

For BioClip: The system is based on the scientific study BioCLIP (arXiv:2311.18803). If you know a better model for bird identification, you can suggest it to the bot owner on Bluesky or via GitHub issues.

If you notice an error, feel free to reply to the bot's post on Bluesky to report the correction.

What time do you wake up?

For the moment the scheduled shots are 08:30, 11:30, 14:30, 16:30, 17:30, 20:30 (FR). Exact time is not guaranteed by the planner.
For the PlantNet plugin: I practice at the time of the shot.
For the AskPlantnet plugin: I practice 10 min after the time of the shot.
For the BioClip plugin (in test phase): I practice 20 min after the time of the shot.
For the AskBioClip plugin: I practice 30 min after the time of the shot.

Can I choose not to be selected by the bot?

The bot is designed to bring value to the community by sharing plant and bird identifications. However, we fully respect your choice if you prefer not to be selected.

Will my image be used to train AI?

Great question. Our goal is to be transparent and reassuring.

For PlantNet: according to the public API documentation (April 2026), submitted photos are kept in volatile memory during identification and are not stored in a database.

The same documentation says PlantNet mainly keeps query history (date/time/image URL), notably for usage monitoring and statistics.

For BioClip / GrBird: on the bot side, the flow is one-way (image -> inference on a pre-trained model -> prediction). The bot does not retrain the model with your image.

This feature relies on open-science providers made available for free by the community, especially PlantNet and HuggingFace (GrBird/BioCLIP).
